How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days
I just finished watching this movie and I have to say that it was one of the most original romantic comedies I have ever watched. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are great. I often think the heroines in romantic comedies are stupid and I wouldn't want to know them, much less be them. But Kate Hudson was the kind of girl you could be friends with, and even better, she was the kind of girl a guy could be friends with, which I think is important to make me believe the relationship has a future.
Kate Hudson is Andie Anderson, a how-to columnist for the magazine Composure (sounds like a shameless shadow of Cosmo to me). She's got to write a column about how to lose a guy in 10 days.
Matthew McConaughey is Ben Barry, and he works for an advertising firm. He really wants a big new diamond client that will move him up from working beer ads to the big time. He says he can sell anything, including himself, so his boss and the other sleazy gals who want the client take him up on it. They bet him that he can't make a woman fall in love with him in ten days, with the client as the prize. And the gals, who know about Andie's plan, go underhanded and pick her.
So that's how it starts. It makes for some really funny situations. Andie tries to drive him away by doing all the things women always do wrong, and he tries despite all of this to get her to stay. Somewhere along the way, they both realize they're not faking it. They really do want to be with each other.
What I like most about this movie is that they've both messed up, they both know it, and they both realize they almost threw away something great. And they were brave enough and in love enough to take it back. And I thought the way Matthew McConaughey goes after her at the end was really romantic. That was definitely a great ending.
The other thing I liked about this movie was that it's not just a chick flick. This is definitely a movie for guys too. Alot of the jokes about the things women do are written into it just for the guys, and my husband and the rest of the guys in the theater thought it was hilarious. So I know when I want to watch this movie, I won't have to wait until he's not home, which is a definite plus.
